FAQ-1509: No Email Address Available

Description

Why does Job Info 3 contain an odd string instead of the email address?

Contents

If Job Info 3 ("Sender's Address") contains an odd string which looks like /O=YOUR COMPANY/OU=ORGANISATION UNIT/CN=RECIPIENTS/CN=USERNAME , the following circumstances are most likely true:

  • You are using Microsoft Outlook (and not POP3) to receive emails.
  • Microsoft Outlook is using an Exchange server to receive emails (and non POP3 or IMAP)
  • The sender is on the same Exchange server as your receiving address.

In these cases, it is not possible to retrieve the actual email address, as it is unavailable to PlanetPress Workflow. This is because the information is not available within the headers. If Microsoft Outlook can see the actual email, it is because it can resolve it through a request with the Exchange server, which is not possible from PlanetPress.

Note that, while this "address" is not user-friendly or pretty, the last part ("CN=USERNAME") does identify the sender. In most cases, using this last part and adding your email domain name will probably give you the address. Furthermore, sending an email to this address, as long as you are using Microsoft Outlook on the same server (same Exchange server), will actually work.
