HOWTO-1466: Changing Working Folders

Description

How to Change PlanetPress Suite working folders?

Contents

Important:

  • This article contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and make sure that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs.
  • In the article below, the %ALLUSERSPROFILE% system constant represents - on most systems - the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data.

Summary

PlanetPress Suite uses several work folders to store temporary files. By default, those folders are located in the %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Objectif Lune\PlanetPress Suite X folder, as recommended by Microsoft (where X is the major version number). This is not always suitable, however, because this location is usually found on the same drive as the operating system. Many administrators prefer segregating data and OS by storing them on different physical or logical drives. The information below explains how to change the location of the default PlanetPress Suite work folders.

Changing the work folders

Warning: Making changes to the following registry key will prevent PlanetPress Suite from working correctly if an invalid path is specified.

Specifying a custom path

  • Stop all PlanetPress Suite services
  • Launch Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Objectif Lune\PlanetSuite.
  • If it doesn't exist, create a new string value named V6WorkingDirectory and/or V7WorkingDirectory (depending on the version(s) installed on your system)
  • Edit the value for that key to contain the full path that replaces the default work directory (%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Objectif Lune\PlanetPress Suite X).
  • Start the PlanetPress Services once again.

In 64-bit versions of Windows, the registry for 32-bit software is located in a subfolder named "WoW6432Node". Any reference to registry locations need to reflect this, such as : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Objectif Lune\PlanetSuite

Reverting to the default path

  • Stop all PlanetPress Suite services
  • Launch Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) and navigate to the following registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Objectif Lune\PlanetSuite.
  • Delete the V6WorkingDirectory and/or V7WorkingDirectory string value(s).
  • Start the PlanetPress Services once again.

Notes

  • Make sure that all PlanetPress Suite users have the appropriate rights for the new folders
  • All the existing files in the previous work folders will remain there. If they are needed in the new folder structure, you will have to copy them by hand.
  • The path specified in the V6WorkingDirectory / V7WorkingDirectory will serve as the new root folder to the structure used by the PlanetPress Suite applications. For instance, if V7WorkingDirectory contains D:\MyTempDir then the following folder structure will be used by PlanetPress Messenger 7:
    • D:\MyTempDir\Messenger\error
    • D:\MyTempDir\Messenger\in
    • D:\MyTempDir\Messenger\Log
    • D:\MyTempDir\Messenger\Spool
